Star Study

Star construction:

Record companies and music stars spend time and money constructing their image so that their target audience will become fans.  This will include how they are seen in their promotional materials e.g. Video, CD cover, poster, magazine articles, publicity events, TV appearances etc.

Go on to the computers and look at how the performer of your song constructs (makes) their image.

This is known as star construction.

  • Find images/news or magazine stories /posters/CD covers of them – copy and paste these into your word document so that you can analyse them.

List of items for your blog - Trailer

Several students have asked me to post what the expectation is in terms of blog work.  Please be aware that if you are doing music video - you need the same kind of stuff - but for music video.  This is not a definitive list and a grade A blog will showcase greater independence and originality.  Please also be aware of your choices for ancillary tasks.

Research

  •  Analysis of trailers/teaser trailers of the genre that you are considering - micro and macro features (individual) I would analyse at least 7 trailers and do a different BLOG entry for each- you don't necessarily need them to be within genre - you just need to make sure that you are taking key elements that you like from them.
  • Analysis of the posters/mag covers for these films (individual)
  • Analysis of audience demographic and box office for the same films -use IMDB (individual)

  • I would have also loved you to have looked at development of trailer over time - remember I set this work weeks ago - however no one has done it.
  • Questionnaire - create google questionnaire about how audiences respond to trailers/posters and film campaigns - this was set as work weeks ago....(group)

General feedback

WWW

Some students have sophisticated analysis of campaigns - rather than individual texts

In the best candidates there is a sense of a creative journey

Areas of concern

Completion is an ongoing issue

Lack of research into audience

Planning is an area of concern

Action

Continue research at home - 1 blog post a day

Lesson and study periods - planning tasks - moodboards/lyrics analysis/scripts/synopsis/storyboards/WWIS/WWIH (trailers)/location ideas/costume ideas/test shots/test edits/audience feedback/test photographs/music ideas/graphic ideas/lip synching

You should be in the editing suites after school and lunchtime - working on this

I would aim for February 3rd (at the very latest) to start filming

Write a synopsis of your film ideas.

You need to include the following:

  • The narrative - crucial
  • The genre - is it hybridised/classic
  • A story cannon e.g. Jaws in space
  • Its production values (low budget gritty realism/hollywood blockbuster/independent- lower budget Hollywood/UK)  and target audience (-Who will be watching your film)

List of possible research and planning for the Film campaign

This is a list of possible research and planning that you should have on your blog by the time that you film.  I am putting it here now so that you have an idea about how much you will have to do, even if you have been keeping up with the timeline so far.

Obviously you should also have research and planning that is self directed and shows the creative process and thoughts that you are going through.

Research

Analysis of trailers/teaser trailers of the genre that you are considering - micro and macro features (individual) I would analyse at least 7 trailers and do a different BLOG entry for each- you don't necessarily need them to be within genre - you just need to make sure that you are taking key elements that you like from them.

Research visual style/auteur theory

Music Videos

Choose a video that you particulary enjoy/like - this should not be based on whether you like the artist and their music.  You must choose it on the merits of the music video.

Try to find out who directed the music video and if they have directed others. Watch these videos - do you notice any similarities/differences.  Does the director have their own style that they bring to the interpretation of the music?

Here is a slide share completed by a student on this topic.  Clearly they make some valid points - however it is important to realise that all music videos are generally edited in time to the music.  This is not attributable to any one director and is more a convention of the form itself.

Complete a post using the information/analysis that you have completed.  This may be completed on PP, short film DVD extra, VLOG, Embed videos/screenshots and written analysis.

Research visual style/auteur theory

Trailers

Clearly what we see and hear in the trailer is influenced by the visual style of the film itself.  Often visual styles are linked to genres, however they can also be linked to the director who made the film.  When directors have recognisable styles they are known as auteurs.

Choose a director from the list below or a particular director that you like.

Alfred Hitchcock

Martin Scorcese

Stanley Kubrick

Baz Lurhman

Guy Richie

Wes Anderson

Coen Brothers

Quentin Taratino

Jane Campion

Chris Nolan

Tim Burton

John Carpenter

Woody Allen

Tim Burton

Mike Leigh

Or any other director that you are interested in from the IMDB list of auteurs - click to go to page.

Task

Watch three trailers for films by this director. Remember that older trailers will be less sophisticated in style than contemporary trailers and will often use elements such as voiceover that are now more generally used in a tongue in cheek, ironic/parodic sense.

What aspects of the trailers are visually similar: this is known as the signature style of the director.

Put this research onto your portfolio.  What have you learnt from this director in terms of producing footage that is consistent with creating a 'look and feel'.

Audience research

YOU MUST HAVE THE SECOND PART OF THIS ON YOUR BLOG - EVEN IF YOU CANNOT APPLY AUDIENCE THEORY, YOU MUST DO THE RESEARCH INTO DEMOGRAPHIC RESPONSE.

It is really important that you can apply Audience theories that we have learnt to your chosen promotional campaign.

Choose 3 trailers or music videos

Analyse them in terms of the audience theories that we have studied -

Try to give specific examples from the text that link in particular to Uses and Gratifications, Two Step Flow, Reception Theory.

Next - research demographic response to one of the videos/films on the web - possible starting points:

  • Use IMDB - to research audience demographic for films
  • Look at how many youtube hits the video/trailer has had
  • Look at comments on youtube - what does this tell you about audience response?
  • search for any websites created by fans
  • search for websites that are created by the Institution - film company/record company/star
  • try to look for twitter/facebook and social media - how is this used to create a relationship with the audience - does the platform that the music video or trailer is on alter the audience theory that you can apply to it?

MediaKnowall - outlines the theories again for you here.  Please use the names of theorists in your work.

Music Videos - Genre/audience/editing idea

Get a video and show it to your audience - it needs to be one that they don't know.

Mute the sound and see if they can guess the beat of the music and the genre of music from the pace of the edit and what they see on screen.

For example can they guess where the music 'drops' in a dance track?

You should record their response - then you can make this into an audience reponse video.

Word Clouds

Use a word cloud generator for your lyrics -

Word clouds make the most used words larger and can provide really useful ideas for what to put into your video or names for your digipack.

After you have made the word clouds for each verse - you could create mood boards/images that link to the word cloud.
