Music Creation 2 (Website)

I decided to create another piece of music as the previous one didn't really create the same ambiance as Kid Cudi's 'Day 'N' Nite' did, as this is not an important aspect of my coursework I decided to quickly make something else that felt more dreamy and like something much more similar to Cudi's song than before, I still believe this will be a good addition to my website overall.

Risk Assessment

As we will be in filming public areas, we will be exposed to many dangers that we will need to address and find the soloutions to

Alleyway:

  • It is a discreet location in a socially deprived area, meaning the risk of some of our equipment being stolen is high therefore we will stay together at all times and only film there during the day. We will also avoid filming there when we see large quantities of youth.
  • The alleyway is narrow and we may get in the way of people which some people may not react well to, which could lead to a fight etc. In order to resolve this theat we will make sure to allow people to pass by and stop recording if anyone wishes to not be recorded in the background.

Pergola:

  • As the Pergola is a private area, we are required to fill in a permission slip to record there for legal reasons. If we do not, this could lead to us being kicked out and banned from the area indefinetely

Studio:

  • We could potenially get into trouble by our school if we use the studio without permission, this would possibly restrict us from using the studio again as we would've broken trust with the teachers and staff. To combat this, we have established a connection with a teacher from the drama department who has kindly gave us permission to use the drama studio whenever we wish after school hour
  • We need to make sure to respect the area and take great care whilst in there as it contains expensive equiment such as the moodboard which creates tinted colour lights. If we break anything, this will cause fianancial problems for the school and ourselves as we may have to pay, and it would restrict our access of it
  • We need to make sure of fire hazards; we will do this by keeping the lights far away from the curtains

Graffiti Tunnel:

  • Similarly to the studio, we most definitely need permission as it isn't public property and could potentially get us into trouble
  • There will be loads of people using graffiti spray cans, we need to make sure we aren't in the way of their creations and we respect them

Adobe After Effects: Scribbles

The video below shows what 'scribbles' I managed to come up with quickly on my first attempt. I edited a few ‘scribbles’ onto a still image of Kid Cudi which proved quite tedious for a mere three second clip. I still believe we should carry this effect onto the final draft as if mastered it can look extremely slick and professional. I will spend some free periods learning how to do more advanced things with this feature, as well as practice using it on moving videos rather than still images. I managed to embed it to my blog via GIPHY.

Audience Feedback: 2nd Draft

The reaction from our audience was more positive but there is clearly still a lot to improve. The first initial thing that instantly didn't make sense to most of the viewers was the couple seconds of dark screen after the titles dissapear; this was done on purpose, however we can see how people can see it as a lack of effort or footage. The editing was praised much more in this edit, one of our viewers said that "it felt like it could possibly be a real music video", there wasn't any long pauses of boring footage and thus the flow of the video felt good. However, people felt there wasn't enough of a narative drive and got quite bored of the same performances repeating recurringly.

We have decided to film an entire new performance and add some more narrative soon in a location called the Pergola; we will make sure to keep all the audience feedback at the back of our minds at all times to make sure we don't make the same mistakes again.

Music Creation 1 (Website)

FL Studio:

I have decided to create an ambient soundtrack that triggers upon entering my website, it'll fit the Hip-Hop genre and would hypothetically be an instrumental of another of the performers singles. I believe that this would be a great addition as it adds another layer to my website and makes it feel more interactive. This is also useful as it can help with one of my evaluation questions which asks me to describe how I used media technologies.

Firstly, I downloaded multiple drum sample packs to give me more options as opposed to the native stock sounds. This is because the majority of them are usually very simplistic and sound quite cheap. I then created a drum pattern using the easy-to-use sequencer with my newfound samples and messed around until I felt it sounded good.

The rapid and erratic hi-hats further reinforce the genre of the beat and the high BPM of 130 gives the piece a modern rap feel. I sampled the melody from a royalty-free website called Looperman as it will save a lot of time and gives me access to professional sounds. The drum pattern is quite generic, however I layered multiple kicks and snares to give them an additional thump, using the shift knob slightly so the frequencies don't collide with each other. I had to EQ (Equalize) the drums to bring out the ‘punchiness’ of them, for example, increasing the treble of the hi-hats and removing the bass; which helped cutting out unnecessary frequencies.

I had to fine tune the 808s and make sure they 'cut' themselves so there would be no overlap or 'wobble', and I also added a distortion plugin to allow the bass to penetrate past most speakers, including laptops and mobile phones. I decided to implement an advanced technique called the '808 Slide', which makes the 808 appear as if it's slowy transitioning to the next note as opposed to a harsh switch.

I used this knob effectively in my piece, I turned down all the knobs to the minimum, and left the hold at an extremely low amount. This means that whatever I apply this filter to, it will play for a brief amount of time before being cut off completely. I added this to the majority of the drums to make them more snappy. However, I increased the delay for a few instruments like the clap in the background to make it feel more 'off-beat' which adds a dimension of realism. I had to mix all the sounds together to make them mesh better. Traditionaly, the kick and snare should be the predominant sounds in Hip-Hop music, so i played around with the volume faders until it sounded pleasing to the ear. I also used automation and panning to channel individual sounds to the left ear and the right one. Finally, I added reverb to the master mixer (which means it applies to the entire track) to make the beat seem more spacious and wide; which is something Kid Cudi usually does.

Website Creation: Wix

I have decided to use the service called Wix in order to create my website, this is as it comes with many preset templates that fit whatver genre I am going for:

I decided to make my website in a template that I felt looked professional, whilst also creating a suitable mood and ambiance. In order to improve this I am going to create a music piece that will act as the websites theme as it will add another dimension to the website and give it more interactivity. However, I have been instructed that I shouldn't make the music play upon loading the website as it can possibly be offputting for some viewers; this is why I decided to embed an audio player towards the top of the screen which can easily be turned on and off.

I have decided to make the album a free download as it will help get the word out about our product, which I would value over monetary gain at the present time, I have also used many images that haven't been seen in the actual music video as I feel like that would be somwhat cheap. I'm currently realy enjoying using Wix to create a professional looking website and I will be posting what I have managed to come up with soon. Creating an aesthetic that synergises with all of our media products is my main goal!

Website 1st Draft

I am aiming for my website to look relatively simple; but incredibly clean and clear.

In this  initial version I have taken great care in making sure the website fits the general aesthetic of both the music video and album advert. The silhouette shot; which was scrapped is used as the predominant artwork of my website as I belive it really fits in.

Music Video Theorists / Theories

Enigma Codes:

We could potentially include some enigma codes in our music video to increase the attention of the audience, the omission of enigma codes could perhaps bore the viewer.

Symbolism:

We should include symbolism into our project to create a deeper meaning that what appears at surface level.

Andrew Goodwin's Theories:

He believes that every music video should present a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, which we most definitely will include. An example of this in our music video could be when the performer is saying "attracting me" and the camera zooms into his face. Furthermore, he claims that the star image of the performer should be exemplified by making him the centre of attention.

Michael Shore:

He postulated that music videos are practically "culture recycling itself" as music videos are recycled styles, and generally conform to adolescent male fantasies, such as money, power and girl with cliché imagery.
