Website Analysis: Rihanna

Rihanna's website is very modern, the whole website remains 'above the fold' apart from the centre section which only scrolls down a subtle amount. This could be in order to make the website more accessible for users on a mobile phone or tablet.

The icons in the middle of the page act as blogs, the most recent being in the top left, and then getting less and less recent the further you go right. They provide fans with the chance to keep well informed about where Rihanna is in the media, and what her most recent ventures include. Additionally, the tabs towards the left of the screen are quite unconventional due to the fact they are usually they are located at the top of the screen. She uses it to promote her recent music and merchandise, including her highly commended fashion brand 'Fenty Beauty'.

The 'Now' tab is used as an alternative to the 'Home' for people who may find the vast amount of images clunky or overwhelming, it presents the exact same posts but in a simple top-to-bottom written format.

The diagonal white line shows which tab you are currently located on, this is useful for users of the website especially when on tabs such as 'Beauty', 'Fashion' or 'Fragrance' as they share similar semantic themes.

Finally, she promotes various social medias towards the bottom left on the screen which I will more than likely include in my own personal website; it seems to be a trope of every single contemporary artist website!

Music Video Director: Hype Williams

Harold "Hype" Williams was born in July 1970s and is a contemporary American music video director who has directly worked with many artists for their music videos such as Busta Rhymes, Ne-Yo and Beyoncé. I have decided to study him and his work due to the genre of our music video; it fits into something he could've potentially directed.

He could be considered an autuer as he has created his own signature style which wasn't used oftenly before him, the Fisheye lens distorted the camera view around the main focus of the video.

Audience Feedback: 1st Draft

We managed to complete our first draft relatively quickly, although the runtime was just under a minute. We decided to do this as it gave as an ample oppurtunity to fix any major problems early, saving us lots of production time if something were to be unfavourable to our viewers. The first criticism was that the performance outside the church was lacklustre and boring, in addition to the fact that it didn't offer any interesting visuals or narrative; which was quite a common negative. There wasn't really a driving narrative, it was just a few performances scrapped together with even fewer abstract shots. Furthermore, the eponymous 'Day 'N' Nite' theme was not fully exlpored, which led our audience to question the link between the visuals and the narrative.

PZB MV Draft

This is our first draft of our music video which only runs for about a minute. We have decided to publish this in order to get some early feedback about the aesthetic of the video as we're still relatively early on in the production process.

Filming Session

This photo shows us working in one of our first filming sessions. We managed to gain access to the schools drama studio, and we used it to our advantage, tampering wth various coloured lights etc. We also brought down a steady-cam and a chair in order to do smooth pans across our performer without looking too jagged and unsteady. We are extremely happy with the cinematography of the shots however the footage did come out a tad grainy; this is an issue with the camera as opposed to the lighting, and thus we were advised to ignore it; especially as we believe the literal quality of the camera will not hinder the overarching quality of our creation.

Day 'N' Night (Lyric Analysis)

My group has decided to go with Kid Cudi's commercial single "Day 'N' Nite' which debuted on February 5th, 2008.

 [Kid Cudi:]

Day and night. - Transition between a sun and a moon?
What, what? - This is a recurring ad-lib in the song.
I toss and turn, I keep stressing my mind, mind.
What, what?
I look for peace but see I don't attain. - Cudi seems to be seeking a state of equilibrium, Nirvana?
What, what?
What I need for keeps this silly game we play, play. - He could be mocking the rap scene, using 'we' he implies that he is a part of it.
Now look at this—what, what?—madness.
The magnet keeps attracting me, me. - Performer could be dragged or lured into something?
What, what?
I try to run but see I'm not that fast.
What, what?
I think I'm first but surely finish last, last.

[Chorus:]
'Cause day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night - Performer could be on a stage, and then the camera pans around to reveal that no one is watching him.
[Video version:] The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone through the day and night
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night, at, at, at night.
Day and night
The lonely stoner seems to free his mind at night
[Video version:] The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night
He's all alone, some things will never change, never change.
The lonely loner seems to free his mind at night, at, at, at night

[Kid Cudi:]
Hold the phone.
What, what?
The lonely stoner, Mr. Solo Dolo.
What, what?
He's on the move can't seem to shake the shade.
What, what?
Within his dreams he sees the life he made, made.
The pain is deep.
What, what?
A silent sleeper you won't hear a peep, peep.
What, what?
The girl he wants don't seem to want him too.
What, what?
It seems the feelings that she had are through, through

[Chorus]

[Kid Cudi:]
Slow mo.
What, what?
When the tempo slows up and creates that new, new.
What, what?
He seems alive though he is feeling blue.
What, what?
The sun is shining. Man, he's super cool, cool
The lonely nights.
What, what?
They fade away he slips into his white Nikes.
What, what?
He smokes a clip and then he's on the way.
What, what?
To free his mind in search of—
To free his mind in search of—
To free his mind in search of—

[Chorus]

At, at, at night - Performer walks off into the night, and then the camera pans to the moon.

Location Scouting

I have spent some time trying to figure out excellent locations for our music video; our chosen song: Day 'n' Night by Kid Cudi is a song with a vibrant and artisitc aura and thus the locations chosen were appropriate to that.

1) Southbank Skatepark: this wonderfu location is well known for its 'Graffiti Tunnel' which is eponymously full of graffiti. Graffitti has been an archetype of Hip-Hop for decades and the vibrant and colourful nature of it will only bolster our music videos aesthetic and quality.

2) Local Church: has nice and elegant architecure than we could possible tamper and edit to make seem quite abstract
